NEWTON'S CRADLE

By Peter Devonald

LOGLINE
A young girl's journey from denial to acceptance.

PITCH
A young girl called Lily blocks out the death of her father. Her distraught mother tries to show her, but nothing gets through: the police at the door, the mother's fairy tale analogy or even the funeral don't help her accept the truth. But as Lilly thinks about cause and effect, the power of the moon on the tides and the seas, and the way the Newton's cradle works, she decides she has no choice but to go and save her father from the pond where he drowned. She goes there at night, goes into the water and fantasises/finds him underwater - freeing him forever. At her fathers gravestone Lily makes her peace - the final part of acceptance. She leaves, arms around her mother's legs. Behind her, a swimming arm band on the grave.
