EXTRACT TAKEN FROM PAGE 65 ONWARDS:
INT. DREAM FACTORY - UNDERGROUND LAIR - LATER
Gary sticks sensor pads on Chuck's body, wiring him up to the
machine. Chuck puts on Virtual Reality gloves.
GARY
Remember, your game exists. You die
there, you die here. When in that world,
you're real. At least, it'll feel real.
Somebody slashes you, you'll bleed.
Somebody punches you, you'll feel pain.
Someone kills you, you die. Understand?
Chuck nods.
GARY
And you know what to do?
CHUCK
I think so.
GARY
You think?
CHUCK
I mean, I can do it.
GARY
Then good luck.
Gary slips a virtual reality mask on Chuck.
GARY
The program will start in 10, 9, 8 -
CHUCK
Would you do it? For love?
GARY
For love?
Gary sighs. Looks around his dump of a house.
GARY
In a New York minute.
Gary clicks a button.
CHUCK'S P.O.V. - INTO THE GAME
Points of light rocket toward him.
Converge.
Echoes of the game - images of all life from Peep World -
plummet past Chuck.
A flood. Peep Bert sailing. Peep Krista feeling Peep Hank's
muscle. Tornado. Tombstones. Peep Joanna running in the
snow. Donuts. Buildings created – others fade away.
The images get faster and faster and then -
PEEP WORLD - DAY
Chuck looks around. The lush Peep valley he created is
spread out below. All of it, too colorful, pixel bright.
Looming before him, a stone cliff resembles Chuck in profile.
The Cathedral bell dongs ominously behind. Chuck turns. Up
another hill, his wrecked town burns.
Peep Dude runs up to Chuck, jumps on him.
Chuck falls to the floor with Peep Dude, giggling. Peep Dude
playfully licks his face.
Everything goes dark, then light. A dark shadow speeds
across the land.
Chuck looks up.
A Dragon with Krista's face flies past.
PEEP TOWN SQUARE
Peep Dude runs around, barking at Peeps, pissing on their
shoes.
Chuck walks around, bemused.
Peep heads poke out of pagoda houses stacked on the
hillsides, staring at him.
Peeps point at him, others whisper to each other, or shield
their children's faces.
Thunder cracks overhead.
Chuck looks up to the sky, the clearest blue. He takes a
step forward -
Howling rain crashes down on him.
He takes a step back, bright sun.
Step forward, rain, wind, hail.
Step back, bright sun.
He looks up. The sky is divided like a pie in alternating
colors from the clearest blue to the fiercest black.
He takes a step to the side. One forward. Still sunny.
One more step. Snow falls heavily.
Chuck sighs and trudges through the drifting snows.
GARY
Looks at the monitor, snow flurries everywhere. He shakes
his head as he types.
PEEP WORLD
Chuck trudges through windswept snow.
PEEP JOANNA (O.S.)
Peep.
Chuck stops, turns. Peep Joanna runs down the street toward
him. He stops her.
CHUCK
Joanna!
She seems to recognize him, terrified as she looks over her
shoulder.
PEEP JOANNA
Peep!
CHUCK
Don't be scared, it's me, I'm in the
game. I'm here to help.
She struggles against him. He fights to hold her.
CHUCK
I know you can understand me. I know you
can talk. I've heard you talk, I've
heard it! Very bad things are happening
here. I need you to help me stop them.
If I don't, the world will end.
She looks away, tears streaming.
PEEP JOANNA
You turned against us.
GARY
Leaps out of his chair and away from the monitor as if
scalded when Peep Joanna speaks.
PEEP JOANNA
You were good to us and now you're
punishing us.
PEEP WORLD
PEEP JOANNA
What did we do?
CHUCK
That wasn't me, it was - the devil. I
would never hurt you guys.
The ground shakes. She looks over her shoulder, wide-eyed.
Breaks free and flees.
PEEP JOANNA
It's coming.
CHUCK
Joanna! Wait!
GARY (V.O.)
Chuck -
Chuck jumps.
GARY (V.O.)
Can you hear me?
CHUCK
Where are you!
GARY (V.O.)
In your head. Leave the chit chat with
the girlie for later, you've got other
business to take care of.
Chuck turns. The Killer Samurai casts a giant shadow.
CHUCK
Shit.
Killer Samurai looks down. His face, oddly familiar.
CHUCK
J - J - Joanne?!
Killer Samurai wields his sword like a weed wacker, mowing
down lampposts.
GARY (V.O.)
Don't worry, Chuck.
CHUCK
Easy for you to say.
GARY
Removes a floppy disk from another computer and shoves it in
the one playing The Peeps. He speaks into a microphone.
GARY
I've downloaded all samurai skills
required. You have the talents of a
trained Samurai master.
MONITOR
A blue bar appears: "UPLOAD IN PROGRESS."
PEEP WORLD
Chuck, jolted as the knowledge uploads into him, puts his
hands together in prayer and closes his eyes.
Chuck's skin and clothes transform into armor.
GARY (V.O.)
(as character from 'Monkey')
Trust in yourself, Tripataka. When the
spirit is cleansed, the heart is pure.
A sword materializes at Chuck's feet.
Killer Samurai goes in for the kill -
A blur of intense fighting, each managing to avoid the
other's sword through expert dodging.
Killer Samurai's sword decapitates a bronze statue of Chuck
in the park.
Their swinging swords cut through buildings, monuments,
anything that gets in his way.
Chuck ducks. The Samurai's blade snips off the ends of his
hair, then lodges in a fire hydrant. He grunts, tries to
free it.
Chuck raises his sword, charges forward.
CHUCK
Control - Alt - Delete, baby!
The Samurai's sword gives a little. A geyser of water spews
from the ruptured hydrant, hits Chuck in the chest.
Chuck, repelled by the water, hurdles back down the hillside.
He picks himself up, sword in hand, shakes his head to clear
it. The Samurai bounds down the hill, sword glinting.
The Samurai swings. Chuck ducks behind a boulder. Sparks
fly. Chuck hops back and forth, Samurai swinging, striking
the stone each time.
Chuck steps back and looks at the stone: It bears an uncanny
resemblance to the Venus de Milo.
He looks at Samurai. Samurai looks at him. Both chuckle.
Chuck swings the sword into the Samurai's protruding belly.
Blinding white light blares from the cut.
The Samurai clasps his hands, closes his eyes, bows. From
deep inside him a resounding OMMMMMM that rebounds off the
hillsides as he pops out of existence.
Chuck shuts his eyes, clasps his hands together and bows.
GARY (V.O.)
Chuck.
Chuck keeps his eyes closed as he recites. Then a thunderous
wrenching noise. The earth shakes, thuds, jumps.
Chuck's eyes open. Pebbles and small stones roll, gather at
his feet. More roll down the hill toward him.
GARY (V.O.)
Heads up!
Chuck looks up in time to see the boulder about to plow him.
He leaps aside and runs up the opposite hill.
The looming cliff with Chuck's profile moves. Spews more
boulders as a colossal STONE MAN rises and stretches.
Chuck's mouth drops.
GARY (V.O.)
Chuck? You listening?
Chuck nods, not hearing anything.
GARY (V.O.)
This guy's got a fatal flaw.
Stone Man storms toward him.
GARY (V.O.)
All he wants is to be understood.
Chuck, terrified, runs up the hill to the Peep town. Stone
Man's bus-sized feet miss smashing him by inches.
GARY (V.O.)
Think of it as a pussycat.
Chuck runs past a Peep dairy farm. Peep cows bellow in fear.
Chuck watches Stone Man scoop Jerseys up and drop them in his
mouth like jellybeans.
CHUCK
THAT'S a pussycat?
Stone Man roars. A terrible wind blows from its mouth.
Debris and Peeps fly past Chuck. He grabs a mailbox and
holds his ground.
The wind stops. Stone Man looks around with an inane grin.
CHUCK
How - what do I use to fight him?
Where's my weapon?
GARY (V.O.)
You're already equipped. Your weapon is
the word.
CHUCK
The word? Is that some kind of Zen
thing, 'cause if it is -
GARY (V.O.)
Talk to him.
CHUCK
Talk to him?
GARY (V.O.)
Listen to me. The bigger they come, the
less they're talked to.
Stone Man rips a lamp post from the pavement and chews it
like a celery stalk.
Chuck steps toward him.
CHUCK
So... Er... Hello.
Stone Man glances at him, goes back to eating the lamp-post.
CHUCK
How's the weather up there?
Stone Man takes a thundering step to the side. Grabs a
passing donut truck.
Chuck winces as he crunches it.
GARY (V.O.)
Ask about his childhood.
CHUCK
You MUST be joking... Guess not.
(to Stone Man)
I hear your childhood was, erm,
difficult. How does that make you feel?
Stone Man roars again, sliming Chuck with green goo.
Chuck wipes slime off his face and tries to look concerned.
CHUCK
Yeah, we've all been there. Got a wife?
Husband? Is that the problem?
Stone Man tilts his head to the side and watches Chuck.
Chuck smiles, nervous.
LATER
Chuck sits on a hill next to Stone Man's head, best buddies.
CHUCK
The way to do it, bud, is to just always
say you're wrong, no matter what. And
when they ask how old you think they are,
work out what age you think, then always
pick a number five years younger.
Chuck pats Stone Man's massive shoulder.
Stone Man nods, reflective. He grins at Chuck, bashful.
Then hugs him impulsively and groans, contented.
Chuck grimaces in pain.
CHUCK
That's beautiful. Thanks, thank you.
Can you stop now? Please. There's only
so much love a body can take.
Stone Man smiles, and sets Chuck down.
Chuck smiles and waves as Stone Man lopes off, sits against
the cliff, waves. Becomes one with the earth again.
CHUCK
I think he broke my rib.
GARY (V.O.)
Another one's arrived.
CHUCK
Just tell me it doesn't need counseling.
Chuck looks toward the Peep town.
CHUCK
You've got to be kidding me.
PEEP MAIN STREET
Deserted. Tumble weeds blow across.
Chuck heads down the street, bowlegged, gun in holster.
Peep Mothers close shutters and draw curtains.
JOHN WAYNE marches down the street towards him.
They reach the correct distance apart. They wait,
hesitating, preparing to fire.
Chuck glances at a clock on the Town Hall, it ticks the final
seconds to high noon.
Chuck spits out tobacco.
Chuck and John Wayne watch each other, hands twitching at
their sides in anticipation of firing their guns.
The clock chimes.
They go for their guns.
Chuck fires first.
JOHN WAYNE
Oy! Ya got me...
John Wayne disintegrates into loose pixels, scattered by
wind.
Chuck spins his gun around his finger, blows out the smoke
from its end and puts it back into his holster.
