INT. CHUCK'S APARTMENT - DAY
Chuck runs in, leaving the door open.
He turns on the monitor.
JOANNA (O.S.)
Nice place.
Joanna walks in. Dude runs up to her shoes.
JOANNA
Hi, doggie.
CHUCK
Watch your shoes.
He frowns as Dude stands on his hind legs for her to pet him.
CHUCK
He usually pees on women.
JOANNA
I hope he didn't pick that up from you.
CHUCK
No, I'm serious. He used to pee on
Krista's shoes all the time.
JOANNA
That's understandable, I wanted to pee on
her myself.
Joanna looks past him at the computer screen.
MONITOR
GRAPH shows the plunging Peeps ECONOMY.
CHUCK
Chuck leans over the keyboard, the cheat sheet before him,
and types CTRL. ALT. C.
JOANNA
I don't want to rush you, but -
CHUCK
One second.
MONITOR
A gray BOX opens, cursor blinking inside.
He types in MOOLA - MOOLA - MOOLA. The ECONOMY picks up,
sluggish.
JOANNA
Is this what you had to run home for?
He shrugs, sheepish.
JOANNA
How old are you? Twelve?
CHUCK
I know, I'm hooked. But it's your fault.
You gave it to me. I took the hint, by
the way.
JOANNA
What hint?
CHUCK
This game's forcing me to take care of
living things - virtually living, of
course, but if I don't watch over them,
they die.
JOANNA
You think I gave you this as part of some
sinister plan to make you a more - what,
caring person?
CHUCK
What else?
JOANNA
I won that in some stupid contest I don't
even remember entering. To be honest, I
thought it would piss you off. That's
why I gave it to you. But hey, if your
theory works for you, that's fine.
MONITOR
Peeps pray in the cathedral.
Cartoon BUBBLES float over their heads with pictures inside:
FRUIT. VEGETABLES. BURGERS AND FRIES.
JOANNA (O.S.)
What are you doing to them?
CHUCK (O.S.)
I'm not doing anything. They're hungry,
so they're praying for food.
CHUCK'S APARTMENT
Joanna straightens, looks at him.
JOANNA
And you're going to provide it?
CHUCK
Naturally. I'm their god.
Chuck ENTERS 'MOOLA' code again.
MONITOR
Delivery TRUCKS appear over a rise in the distance.
A brilliant sun rises and shines down.
The store windows fill with stock, market stalls with
truckloads of produce, the fish market with seafood.
The Peep Cop runs to the cathedral and blows his shrill
whistle. Peeps pour out, rejoicing, stampeding for the
stores as the cathedral bell rings.
CHUCK'S APARTMENT
Joanna shakes her head.
JOANNA
Are you done?
CHUCK
All done.
She stops, squints down at the monitor as Peep Joanna runs
past. Chuck turns the monitor off.
CHUCK
I kinda have the whole office in there.
JOANNA
I hope you kinda have a good therapist in
there, too.
MONITOR - NIGHT
Peep Joanna sits in what was Peep Krista's living room. She
wears black and has an air of suffering.
CHUCK
Stares at the screen, guilty.
CHUCK
Come on. It's not so bad.
He moves the mouse.
MONITOR
Peep Joanna goes down a short hall. It elongates, stretches
up and out into vaulted painted ceilings. Gilt mirrors
reflect giant crystal chandeliers.
Gold double doors swing open. Inside, a feast is laid out.
CLICK. Peep Joanna's clothes change to bright flowers. She
turns her back on the feast.
CHUCK
Leans closer to the monitor.
CHUCK
I made a mistake - that's all. People
make mistakes all the time.
MONITOR
Peep Joanna takes off her bright flower clothes.
CHUCK
Looks away - ever the gentlemen.
He turns back -
MONITOR
Peep Joanna, again in black, goes into the mirrored hall.
CLICK. A giant glistening Christmas tree appears in front of
her, presents heaped around it.
CLICK. Through the tall windows, snow falls.
Peep Joanna drops to her knees and wails in her hands. Her
tears puddle on the marble tiles around her.
CHUCK (O.S.)
Aw, come on! Don't do that.
CHUCK
Pleads with the monitor.
CHUCK
What do you want? I'm sorry. What else
can I say? Oh, come on! At least be a
little happy. Please! Pleeasseeeee...
Through the computer's speakers, jingling bells. Faint,
growing louder, Peep voices singing a carol.
MONITOR
Outside Peep Joanna's Versailles-like house, a line of
singing Town Peeps gather in the falling snow.
CHUCK (O.S.)
What the hell's going on now?
Peep Joanna pokes her head out the door. Leaps out, hugging
and kissing the other Peeps, then leads them inside.
CLICK. The mansion's outer walls vanish. Peeps pack the
mirrored hall, eat from the spread, play the piano.
CLICKS. A table appears.
CLICK-CLICK-CLICK. Three beer kegs. Peeps crowd around it.
Chuck CLICKS the sky. Fireworks burst over the ocean. Peep
Joanna and her Peep guests run out on the terrace to marvel.
CHUCK
Zooms in on Peep Joanna, happy.
CHUCK
You were lonely, that's all. You were
just lonely.
